Marketing on YouTube? Really?

April 20, 2011

Happy Wednesday!! The week is now half over or more than half for those that are off Friday for the holidays. This week we have continued with our social media theme so far from last week and Monday. We have discussed marketing on the social media outlets LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Today’s social media outlet: YouTube. Now, many of you if not all are saying, What? Marketing on YouTube? Really? My response, Yes and here’s how.

YouTube is a video sharing website where users can view, share, and upload videos for the world to see. So, you can see just from the definition what makes this a great marketing tool because when you upload a video to this site the WORLD sees it, the other benefit of this outlet, it’s FREE. So, how can YOU market on YouTube exactly? Well, it’s a simple. To market on YouTube you are going to create, upload, and post a video. So, let’s start creating that video.

To create a successful maybe even viral video you don’t have to hire a big bucks production company in fact the most successful videos on YouTube are homemade.

To create a successful YouTube video watch your video time. Try to make your video only 15-30 seconds in length much like a commercial, but at all possible keep your video advertisement short. Of course there’s exceptions to the rule, if you are making a how to video, doing a video of a demonstration, or video that shows off your expertise in some way, these videos will be longer, but my advice keep it to 5 minutes or less. You don’t want a long video because you will lose your audience and you need you audience. Your audience will help promote your video so take your time, be creative, and have fun.

Now, that you have created your video and are happy with the final copy it’s now time to debut it. To promote your video you want to get it out there so, first get it uploaded to YouTube. Now, that it’s uploaded take these steps to be a YouTube success.

To promote your video Email It. Email your video to contacts, friends, family, and your target market. Emailing your video to all whom email address you know will help your video get more views and more exposure. Also, those you emailed it to can then forward it to others they know.

To promote your video Blog It. If you have a blog already then promote your video on your blog. Try writing a blog about the experience with making the video and post it for viewers or just post it with a small summary, either way will bring in the views.

To promote your video Post It. Further bring in the views of your video by creating tweets and posts on both Facebook and Twitter about it with a link to the video. Posting your video will allow it to be re-tweeted on Twitter and “liked” on Facebook and ultimately get you more views and more prospects and clients.

To promote your video Post It again. Now that you have posted your video to your own Facebook and Twitter go post it on message boards and other places that are relevant to your message and target audience so you know they will be sure to visit and see your video when they do.

Creating YouTube videos is a bit more time consuming than managing your Twitter or Facebook, but it’s definitely worth it especially if your video goes “viral”. So, if you haven’t already take advantage of this wonderful and popular marketing tool.
